Work began in 1220 at the east end of the Cathedral, with the Bishop laying the first stones. He was joined by local nobles, including William and Ela Longespée, the Earl and Countess of Salisbury. Records tell us that it was witnessed by a "great crowd of people who shouted and wept for joy."
I spent a few very happy years studying at the Theological College adjacent to the cathedral, and I have treasured memories of worshipping in this hallowed place.
