Lost and Found

Immediately after telling two parables – one recounting the finding of a lost sheep, and another about finding a lost coin – the Lord Jesus says this: “There will be rejoicing among the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”

This tells us something important and beautiful about the mercy of God and the value of every human soul. When a sinner turns away from sin and returns to God, it isn’t just a private matter between that person and the Lord, but it actually causes joy which rings throughout heaven!

Sometimes we forget how much God desires our salvation. He won’t force us to stay close to Him, but He always stays close to us. He takes no delight in our failures, but He’s always there to pick us up when we fall. He doesn’t abandon us when we wander from the path of righteousness, but He’s like the shepherd who searches for the lost sheep.

God seeks us with patience and love, always longing to bring us home. And when we repent and confess our sins and turn again toward Him, heaven rejoices.

The way God looks out for us teaches us a great deal about how we should look out for others. No one is beyond the reach of God's mercy. No matter how far someone may have strayed, the grace of God can always awaken a contrite heart and lead that soul back to Him.

Is there anyone you know who has wandered away from God? Offer a prayer for them now, and if there is anything you can say or do that might help them to look to God, today is the day to do it. And never stop hoping for their return, because every soul brought back to God is a cause for joy amongst the very angels of heaven.
